June 19th 2026
Here’s where I was on June 19th. My top speed was 35.4 words per minute.

Average speeds are a little more “less impressive”. I’m faster than 1.44% of people, or to put it another way, 98.66% of people are faster than my rather lacklustre 17.4 words per minute.

Today
Quite literally. I’ve just completed my “proper” typing practice for the day and for the first time ever, I had three sections at 100% accuracy. I was going very slow today. I found that saying the letter to myself (in my head, silently) really helps get it correct. It is very much like learning to read (which I can remember, because for reasons I may get into eventually, for me was stupendously difficult.). Very irritating as you cannot completely focus on your intention, but it is a necessary scaffolding whilst the neural pathways build themselves.

Of course I’m doing myself no favours by practicing on a split columnar keyboard and then switching to a standard keyboard, but that’s how I’m rolling.
The key thing is that the average speed was up and the accuracy was also up.
Nearly a year
I suppose there are people who will be amazed that after a year, this is the total of my progress. Reddit appears to be full of people who decided to learn to touch type on Friday and by Monday were 140 wpm. I’m not that person and frankly, I don’t care if you judge me on this.
What matters is that I’ve made distinct progress over this last year. I now find my fingers don’t shake with confusion and I am starting to notice significantly longer, and most importantly, joyful periods of 100% whilst typing.
Typing has always held me back. It has been my main blocker, but I’m not sure how much longer that’s going to be true.
